The drop rates for the mounts are 0.4% for Horseman and 1% for Invincible.Īnd since all of us without those two mounts are feeling bad right now, here's a slightly less infuriating piece of extreme luck, as _echnaton managed to get the Tusks of Mannoroth from Garrosh a while ago, which is pretty lucky in itself, but they then proceeded to utterly destroy any subsequent luck they may ever have by actually getting TWO of them in one kill! The drop rate for the Tusks is about 0.3% so this one is definitely a winner. Getting these two mounts at all over the span of a player's time with WoW is an impressive feat on its own, now we have a player that got the two on the same day! And then we have probably the second on the "flying horses that you may never get regardless of how long you" farm list, aka Invincible, a decade-long quest for some players. It's time for another "I'm insanely jealous of these players' luck" post! Hallow's End is back and with it one of the rarer mounts (as it's only attainable during the event, 15 days out of the year), with players running the dungeon an insane number of times to get it. Ultramon also respects the default Windows taskbar settings and will show Text and Icons if you've got that setting set: I think respecting the grouping option is more important then the icon thing, but I though it was interesting nonetheless. Ultramon not only didn't group them together (per my settings within Windows itself), it also used the actual icons for the folders I was on, rather than the default Explorer one. What's this? Three apps? Well, note that the second and third above were actually Windows Explorer windows. Here are the same four apps running in the Windows 7 taskbar on my primary monitor. Here are four apps running in an Ultramon toolbar on my third monitor. Here are the things I look for in a Multimonitor Taskbar on Windows 7 and how Ultramon 3.0.8 beta stacks up. As of Dec 21st, there's a 3.0.8 beta available that runs on Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7. That said, Ultramon has always been very tight code and I've had minimal trouble with it. These days folks want to see code rev'ing weekly, minimum. Christian is very kind when he answers forum posts, but it's no uncommon to hear folks complaining about the speed at which the beta version's bugs are fixed. Sometimes you won't hear anything for literally months, then there will be a flurry of activity, then silence. Ultramon has long been the only game in town when it comes to multimonitor support on Windows. That's over 7 years for the math-challenged. He's been making software since 1998 and I purchased his product Ultramon when it was version 2 in Jun of 2002. Realtime Soft appears to be a one-person company run by Christian Studer out of Switzerland. Try them both yourself! Ultramon 3.0.8 Beta from Realtime Soft Note the post was written against Specific Versions whose features are in likely flux. For the most part they are similar, but I'm a utilitarian and I'm interested in the bread and butter stuff first.įirst, Ultramon, then DisplayFusion. I'm reviewing these products taskbar capabilities, not the many other features they each offer like multi-monitor wallpaper support, etc. Here are the two contenders and my conclusion. Most of all, they want their apps to LOOK like Windows 7 - like they belong. Folks want things to integrate with Windows 7 features like jump lists and the superbar. Nasty looking apps won't cut it any more. The most interesting thing about Windows 7 isn't a feature it's that Windows 7 has a strong sense of aesthetic. Regardless, Windows 7 has an awesome ecosystem of 3rd party stuff and there are two contenders fighting for the title of "Multi-Monitor Taskbar for Windows 7." I'm sure someone owns this feature on Windows 7 and I'm sure that it didn't make it into the product for some reason and I'm sure someone is looking at the feature for the future*. However, the one remaining gaping hole in Windows 7 for the Power User ( like me with my four (sometimes five) monitors) is the lack of a native taskbar that works across more than one monitor. Even Uncle Ronnie, a 90+ year old die-hard Windows XP guy has been upgraded (but hasn't noticed, other than "it's snappier.") Everyone's running it and everyone's happy. In fact, Windows 7 was my number 1 Christmas Gift this year. I've fully converted myself and the extended family over to Windows 7. I was even more unplugged this time than last year when we spent Christmas in South Africa (where I was blogging near-daily over a cell phone modem).Īnyway, I'm still on vacation until next Monday, but I have been messing around with a few things I wanted to share, and here is one such project.ĭisclaimer: I'm not on the Windows 7 team and I have no knowledge about anything they are, have, may, may not, will, will not do, or did and didn't tell anyone. It was very interesting being (reasonably) unplugged. Wow, this was the longest time I've ever gone without blogging. Snoozeīoomerang also works for messages that you can’t address right now, but you want to get back to at a specific time. When John doesn’t tell you what time works for him for that thing you are asking about, the email lands back in your inbox, and you remember to get on John’s case. You can also specify that you want to “boomerang” the message no matter what happens.Ĭhoose a time frame, as loose or as specific (“Tomorrow 9am,” or “June 15 8:15pm”) as you want. There’s a check box between the subject and body of the email, which allows you to “Boomerang this message,” on the condition that you don’t hear back. The easiest example is when you’re emailing somebody about something, and you want to make sure they get back to you. It allows you to have a clean inbox, and the peace of mind that comes with it, but to eventually get back to those matters if they remain unresolved. They both work entirely inside Gmail, but in different ways.īoomerang for Gmail is where the tool gets its name, because it “boomerangs” email back to you – it returns it to your inbox, even after you’ve archived it. Boomerang exists as two plug-ins: Boomerang Gmail and Boomerang Calendar. BoomerangĮxcept for when it comes to Boomerang. For this reason, it’s almost never worth building habits around tools meant to improve Gmail. In any case, when things go wrong, they go very wrong, and your brow gets quickly furrowed. You can’t really hold back on updating Gmail (though some Apps customers may hold back updates). In more than four years of writing about technology, I’ve found that Gmail changes quite a bit and quite often, and technologies built on top of it have a hard time catching up. I am not a fan of add-ons, plug-ins, or other things that mess with my Gmail, and I don’t think I’m alone. Kevin Purdy uses two Google Apps plug-ins to help him manage his inbox and calendar. Manage your Gmail inbox and calendar with Boomerang Android users know, for example, that in order to get the most out of their device, it is necessary to allow Google to use your (anonymized) data to offer you real-time advice about your location, travel options, news, the weather and more. Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Docs, Google Now, and Search (among many others) all offer great features. Google's services are undoubtedly excellent. Google has set it up in response to new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that is due to come into effect on May 25. If you have a Google account, you will want to visit the new My Activity page. While that opens up a whole ethical can of worms about the future of AI, it is not quite as scary as all the information Google has been logging about your use and interactions with its services. The settings in the tool give users the option to save their interests across all of their apps and devices, something that will be quite valuable for advertisers, who covet that ability. There has been a lot of concern expressed in response to Google's I/O 2018 demo of its new Duplex technology - it uses AI to mimic a human persona / voice in order to get tasks done, like booking a table at a restaurant or book a haircut, by being able to respond and interact with a real person on the other end of a phone line. The My Activity portal also lays the foundation for Google to be able to serve the same ads–and track users–across their various devices. But it also gives Google more information on users’ interests, which the company can then use to help advertisers craft more relevant ads. The My Activity tool gives users the ability to tell the company which ads they’re interested in, allowing them to personalize their preferences. And the recent rise of ad blockers has presented a serious challenge to the free flow of money in the ad business. Ad blockers have become a major problem for many online companies, but none more so than Google. Google’s business is predicated on selling ads and showing as many of them as possible to users. She also can delete specific kinds of activity history stored by Google.īut the option that many users will be most interested in is the one related to ads. The activity controls portal then gives the user the chance to turn on and off history collection for a number of things, including web search, YouTube search and watch, device information, and location history. Once signed into her Google account, a user can go to the My Account page and then select the My Activity option. Google began rolling the My Activity portal out to some users this week, and it puts much more control over account activity in users’ hands. Users also can dig down into the specific kinds of ads they see and control which types they want to block. The company’s new My Activity console is an attempt by Google to allow users to pick and choose which information the company stores about their activities, including location data, browser history, search history, and voice and audio activity. But the company is now giving users the ability to access, control, and even delete information about their online activities on a granular level. Google has all the data, and it’s usually pretty stingy about how it lets users control that data, even data about the users themselves and their own activities. The art in Contra: Returns is more modern how did you decide on the current aesthetic? The key to engaging players in Contra: Returns is to keep providing them with new game experiences. We also upgraded the battle experience where we added Hero specific skills, teams, vocational skills, and other battle skills. In addition to the traditional RPG game mode, we incorporated MOBA elements such as PVP, PUBG-style play modes, Roguelike, and other new modes. In the long run, we knew the game would need to stay current in order to retain users. The classic Contra elements include the spread gun, jump flips, red pants, blue pants, and the exciting shooting battles. Instead, they look for the feeling that they once had when playing this game in their childhood. We also have an abundance of content designed to keep players engaged.ĭo you prefer to restore the original game experience, or try to experiment with new play modes?Īlthough we expect players to be drawn to the game by the nostalgia of the classic Contra, we found they don’t want or need the exact game experience. This depth elevates Contra: Returns to a game that can sustain for 1 month, 1 year, or even 10 years, with playable levels and PVP modes that can support a long-term game experience. In terms of play modes, we’re planning to add more depth to the 8-level game through more strategic game battles. In this new game, our two heroes look more like partners. We have upgraded the art and added more content, building a new world story and adding more heroes as the story progresses so that each character will have their own stories and social network. The memorable soundtracks will also be coming back so players will be reminded of those classic moments when playing the levels. Ultimately, we decided to keep the original control experience in single games and restore some elements from the classic game: the red pants, blue pants, and some of the bosses. When working with this type of IP, the biggest challenge is how to balance the classic elements with extending the mobile experience so that players can recall their fond memories of the franchise, but be motivated to play in the long term. Contra and Super Contra were very popular at launch in the late 80s and early 90s, its fixed screen format and a pseudo-3D view left an impact on players. What’s the biggest challenge in bringing the classic Contra experience to mobile platforms?Ĭontra is a classic game series. We recently had a chance to chat with the Contra Returns team at TiMi Studio Group about the game and discussed the challenges in bringing it to mobile, the free-to-play model it uses and more. The release looks to evoke those nostalgic feelings whilst introducing new elements to the franchise. So, its arrival on mobile has been highly anticipated by players. It's a highly regarded IP that creates strong feelings of nostalgia in folks. Contra Returns has launched for iOS and Android devices globally, following a four-year stint of China-only availability. I’ll cover a couple different knife styles. I’ll use this section to highlight some of my favorite knives featuring drop point blades. That’s because we have a ton of them to choose from, and your intended use will also define what is best for your needs. Picking out the best drop point knives is no easy task. For most people I don’t think it will be a discernible difference, but it’s another point to consider. With the curved edge of a drop point, the pressure will vary depending on where you are at in the cut. That’s because the pressure is applied uniformly along the edge. In some cases tantos can be slightly better at slicing. Generally speaking, a tanto blade is going to have a stronger tip, so if you are looking for the blade shape with better tip strength, generally speaking a tanto will be better. This will make a task like mincing garlic much harder with a tanto. On the flip side, you will never be able to “rock” the blade back and forth on a tanto like you will with a drop point. Tanto blades can be great for things like cutting out coupons, and other thin objects on flat surfaces. Both feature strong and capable tips, but the tanto blade has little to no belly, while the drop point features a good amount of belly.īoth are good blade shapes, and your choice will depend on your preference. Tanto Point BladesĪs I alluded to in the earlier section, tanto and drop point knives are very different. Also, the tip is not as prominent, which makes it ideal for skinning, and for disemboweling quarry without puncturing their organs. It doesn’t provide as much belly as a clip point, but it’s pretty good. Generally you want a knife with a good amount of belly for a hunting knife, and the drop point delivers that. They are great for wood work, chopping, and general utility work.įinally, drop point knives can be a good choice for a hunting knife. Once again, that’s because they are such a versatile blade shape, with a good tip, belly, and plenty of edge. The fine tip of a drop point is excellent for thrust cuts, and if you get one with an adequately sized blade, it can be a great “martial blade”.ĭrop point knives are also popular in camp and survival knives. Most good tactical knives double as utility blades, so no surprises there. It’s a traditional knife shape that many people associate with utility.ĭrop point knives are also popular for tactical knives. Drop point knives come with a good tip for detail work, some belly for tasks that benefit from a knife with belly (mostly food preparation and crunching cuts), and a good amount of straight cutting edge, which is ideal for slicing.ĭrop points are also a little less aggressive looking than something like a clip point, wharncliffe, or tanto blade. It’s a popular choice because it’s simple and visually pleasing, but also highly functional. Many great daily carry blades come in a drop point configuration. What is a Drop Point Knife Used For?ĭrop point knives are versatile, and are used for a variety of tasks.įirst of all, they are great for Every Day Carry (EDC) knives. The knife on the bottom is the SOG Terminus XR with a classic drop point blade. The knife on the top is the Cold Steel Medium Voyager with a clip point blade. Are we confused yet? Better to illustrate this with a photo: Another way to look at it is the spine of a clip point is concave, while the spine of a drop point is convex. The spine of the drop point always drops down. The spine of a clip point, or trailing point knife, curves back away from the handle. Here’s my ESEE Zancudo with a slowly sloping drop point, that drops to the point where it’s almost a spear point:Ĭontrast the drop point with a clip point. There are many variations on the drop point. It drops down from the handle to the point, or tip of the blade, hence “drop point”. It features a classic drop point blade:Ī drop point blade features a spine that slopes from the handle of the knife to the tip of the blade. Here is a picture of the Benchmade Bugout. You will be hard pressed to find a more useful all round blade shape. The drop point is simple, visually pleasing, and practical. The drop point is the most common blade shape, and for good reason. |
